The Volvo 960 was based on the 700 series. It was running un an old but proven platform and was powered by a state of the art 2.9L I6 engine that produced and impressive 204 hp, which is eerily similar to the power figures of the Crown Victoria.
The simplicity and sturdiness of the 900 series cars made it very popular among commercial customers, just like the Crown Victoria.

To make a long story short, the Volvo 960 was running on an old but proven chassis, powered by a state of the art i6 engine and was popular as fleet vehicles and are now popular among car enthusiasts.

I am leaning towards 740 being like a Crown VIc.

I really like these. I bet the engine bay is big enough to put a Ford Modular V8 in too. Hmmmmmmmmmm

They were big, underpowered, made on the same platform for 10 years and were virtually unchanged in that time. Reliable.

To make serious power in a Volvo you just need a Redblock engine. That's it. Very high power outputs have been reliably obtained from those engines, you just need to figure out how to make it stick to the ground.

I was thinking about doing ones but I could only find one 240 online that had one. The modular is a very tall engine because of the Dual overhead cams. That and the customizability of the SBC is why SBCs are used everywhere and not the modular.

Worked with a lady who had a green 960 for years. Nice seats - but for a boxy as they are it had no head room.

Yeah its amazing how stout my 960 is. It's surprisingly low to the ground (Elantras are taller than it) and the ceiling is really quite low
